There are distinct differences in tone of voice, facial expression, body language, etc. when a friend is just horsing around and someone who is deliberately inflicting cruelty with the intent of enjoying the other person’s reaction. Also, context is key.
Learning when to go along with it and when to walk away can be very difficult if one has grown up or is growing up in an abusive household and/or is on the highest-functioning end of the Autism spectrum.
When I was a kid I always hated it when adults who weren’t there to read the context or body language or hear the tones of voice told me that the other kids were just trying to be friends. My friends were trying to be friends. Loads of other kids were just trying to get a rise out of me.
I gave up on adults helping me with my problems and just rested assured that I could, if needed, defend myself if the verbal abuse escalated into physical abuse.
